Miguel A. Southwell is the Deputy Director of Business for Miami International Airport (MIA) and four Miami-Dade County general aviation (GA) airports.  He is responsible for generating over $700 million in annual revenue from a wide variety of airport businesses including real estate rentals, restaurant, retail, parking, and hotel operations, and soon - rock mining. Mr. Southwell also oversees, HR, procurement, contracts, arts and cultural activities of the Airport. 
 
Before joining MIA in 2001, Mr. Southwell spent 11 years at Atlanta’s Airport in numerous positions, including Interim Assistant General Manager-Business and Finance.  He also served for five years as an adjunct professor of Aviation at Georgia State University.  Mr. Southwell previously worked as a Regional Manager and Assistant Vice President of Willamette Savings, where he oversaw the lending and savings operations of 16 Portland, Oregon branches. He began his career in the airline industry. 
 
Mr. Southwell holds a bachelor’s degree in management from Portland State University and a master’s in international business from City University of New York. He is member of the World Governing Board of Airports Council International (ACI) and the Immediate-Past-President of its Latin America and the Caribbean Region. ACI is the official association of airports worldwide.
 
Among his most recent accomplishments, MIA was ranked the fastest-growing large airport in the US, and also ranked as having the best concessions (food, beverage, and retail) program in the nation.  Mr. Southwell believes that the key to the success of the next generation of Black professionals, is the work of building their confidence.  He quotes William Hazlitt, “As is our confidence, so is our capacity.”
 
Mr. Southwell is from the Caribbean nation of Antigua and lives in Miami with his wife Allison. They have two sons, Kiel and Sean. For relaxation, he enjoys carpentry, gardening, and reading mysteries.
