MIA HOSTS MULTI-SENSORY TOUR FOR MIAMI LIGHTHOUSE STUDENTS

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --

On July 16, nearly 30 summer camp students age 13 to 18 from the non-profit organization Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired received a hands-on tour of Miami International Airport designed to instill confidence about traveling through an airport. Officials from the Miami-Dade Aviation Department escorted students through several phases of the airport, including: a visit to the American Airlines ticket counter where each student chose a favorite destination; walking through a security checkpoint; and boarding an aircraft.  Each student, whether blind or visually impaired, was able to “see” the airport through physical and auditory interaction, which reinforced Miami Lighthouse’s tenet, “It’s possible to see without sight TM.”

“At MIA, we want to ensure that everyone, regardless of their physical ability, can experience the wonder of flight,” said MDAD Terminal Operations and Customer Service Division Director Dickie Davis. “Yesterday's tour did just that, and we plan to do more such programs in the coming months.”
