Symbolism: Sign of the Times

Miami International Airport’s MIA Galleries in collaboration with Miami-Dade County Public Schools Division of Life Skills & Special Projects.
Students learned about the late 19-century art movement whose artists communicated ideas through symbols instead of bluntly depicting reality. The forefront of modernism, Symbolism developed a new and often abstract means to express psychological truth and the idea that behind the physical world lay a spiritual reality suggesting ideas through symbols and emphasizing the meaning behind forms, lines, shapes, and colors. For this exhibition, students were encouraged to thoughtfully explore personal ideas that relate concepts using metaphorical imagery and forms to visually explain their ideas or concepts to the viewer.
